Policy on AI use by Pupils
The Grey School holds honesty and integrity as the foundation of all academic work. For that reason, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, including but not limited to ChatGPT, to generate or complete your assignments is strictly prohibited. Submitting work created in this way is no different from asking another person to write your coursework, and it will not be tolerated. Violations of this policy are treated as violations of academic honesty and may result in discipline up to and including expulsion.
The reasoning here is that assignments at GSW, most often in the form of essays, are instruments that allow our instructors to see how you think, and where your strengths and weaknesses may lie. Your vocabulary choices and even small missteps such as spelling or grammar errors all provide important clues to that end. This is important as these details allow the faculty to shape feedback that's specific to you, strengthening your skills and supporting your growth. If your essay is written by an AI, that process breaks down and you're denied the guidance that comes only when your own work is under review. Outsourcing assignments therefore undermines not only your education but also the integrity of the entire academic process.
At the same time, the Grey School recognizes that AI tools are rapidly becoming part of the modern world. Wizards must be able to advise others on their wise and careful use, which requires direct familiarity. For that reason we do allow AI for brainstorming, planning, organizing, researching, and the like in the pursuit of your coursework at GSW. Those pupils to whom English is not their first language can also benefit from its proofreading capabilities, to prevent spelling or grammar errors born from a lack of familiarity with the language that may hinder the clear expression of their thoughts.
That said, one may not use AI to generate the body of their essay or any other substantial portion of your assignments. The work you submit must be your own, born of your thought and effort. The role of AI is to support your learning, not to replace it. To use it as a crutch for the work itself is to diminish your own growth, and to do so at the expense of your integrity as a Wizard.
The Grey School expects that all who study here will apply tools wisely, with judgment and discernment, while never losing sight of the central principle that your education is earned by your own work.
