This paper examines the historical understanding of the relationship between human perception and noncorporeal intelligences, or spirits, treating the spirits as ontologically real for the purpose of analyzing the mechanisms of their perception.

Katherine Johnson is often remembered today as the woman who helped “do the math” for the Moon landing. That phrase is simple, and because it is simple, it has traveled widely. Yet her real story deserves more than a sentence.

This month we turn our attention to Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr., the first American to travel into space, a man whose famous flight lasted only minutes, yet whose preparation for those minutes had been shaped by years of training, military service, technical study, and keen American nerve held under extraordinary pressure.

A school exists, in part, to provide the pupil with something they cannot fully provide for themselves: another trained mind willing to read their work, examine their reasoning, and say, with care, where the matter has gone thin.

Summer Term 2026 Begins By Grey Matters Staff With the Spring Equinox we welcomed both the new season of growth and life as well as a new Term at GSW. While a new Scabbard of Apprentice Leaders settles into their roles and all manner of new and exciting events and initiatives are hatched, we thank you for being a part of it in your own unique ways!

This month, we turn our attention to a woman whose influence took a different form, though no less enduring in its effect: Dorothy Day. Born in Brooklyn in 1897, the daughter of a journalist, her early life was shaped by movement and a close exposure to the wider conditions of American life at the time.

"This is the part of the year where the School really gets to breathe together,” Headmaster Kingsley said when asked about this year’s gathering. “Online study gives us reach and flexibility, and that is of course a wonderful thing! But Conclave, it gives us... lets call it texture. It reminds us that wizardry isn’t just something you think about. It’s something you do, and something you practice alongside other people.”

Though Randolph’s name is not etched into marble as often as some of his contemporaries, his influence lingers in something quieter and perhaps more difficult to sustain: the expectation that deliberative bodies must function even when disagreement runs high.

I am pleased to formally announce the launch of the GSW Publishing House!

Beyond the Publishing House, GSW is keen to take a step into the world of field research and exploration as well. While I don’t have too many details to share just yet, as we’re still in the process of setting things up, I can say that we are making plans for a 2027 trip to the UK and looking at the possibility of setting aside a small amount to begin the development of an “Expeditionary Fund.”
